Privacy Policy for VeraBite

Effective Date: March 28, 2026

VeraBite (“VeraBite,” “we,” “our,” or “us”) respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, process, disclose, and protect information when you use the VeraBite mobile application and related services (collectively, the “Service”).

By using VeraBite, you acknowledge that your information will be handled as described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Scope

This Privacy Policy applies to information processed through the VeraBite app, including food label images, dietary profile information, scan history stored on your device, subscription status, and certain device-related identifiers used to operate the Service.

2. Information We Collect

We collect and process the following categories of information:

A. Food Label Images and Scan Content

When you use VeraBite to scan a product, the images you capture or upload (such as ingredient labels or nutrition facts panels) are transmitted through our systems and to third-party AI providers for analysis.

Depending on your use of the app, this content may include:

  • photos of ingredient labels or nutrition panels
  • cropped thumbnails shown in your local scan history
  • text visible in the image
  • generated ingredient, nutrition, and allergen analysis results

We use this information solely to provide scan results and app functionality.

Unless otherwise stated, food label images submitted for scanning are not stored permanently on our servers after processing. However, they may be transiently processed in memory, network logs, or third-party systems as necessary to provide the Service.

B. Dietary Profile Information

If you use dietary profile features, we may process information you enter, such as:

  • selected allergies or intolerances
  • dietary preferences or lifestyles
  • custom dietary rules or free-text notes

Please do not enter unnecessary sensitive personal, medical, or identifying information into any free-text dietary fields.

C. Anonymous Device and App Identifiers

We do not require you to create a traditional account using your name, email address, or phone number in order to use the app.

To operate the Service, enforce scan limits, support referrals, and manage subscriptions, we may generate or process anonymous identifiers such as:

  • a random app user ID
  • a random device ID
  • referral codes
  • scan usage counters
  • subscription status identifiers

These identifiers are used to operate the Service and prevent abuse.

D. Local Scan History

Your scan history, including cropped thumbnails and past scan results, may be stored locally on your device. This local history is controlled by you and is not intended to be a cloud account history maintained by us.

If you delete the app or clear local app data, that locally stored history may be deleted.

E. Subscription Information

If you purchase VeraBite Pro, we and our subscription management providers may process limited subscription-related data, such as:

  • subscription status
  • entitlement information
  • transaction metadata
  • anonymous app user ID associated with your subscription

Purchases themselves are processed by Apple, not by us directly.

F. Advertising and Device Information

If you use the free version of VeraBite, the app may display advertisements through Google AdMob or similar providers. Depending on your settings and permissions, advertising providers may process information such as:

  • device identifiers
  • advertising identifiers (such as IDFA on iOS, if permitted)
  • approximate location derived from IP address
  • app interaction and ad performance information
  • diagnostic and crash information

If you deny Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission, you may receive non-personalized ads instead of personalized ads.

G. Support Communications

If you contact us for support, feedback, or legal/privacy requests, we may collect the information you choose to provide, such as:

  • your email address
  • message content
  • screenshots or attachments you send us

3. How We Use Information

We use information for the following purposes:

  • to analyze ingredient labels and nutrition facts
  • to generate scan results, dietary alerts, and product assessments
  • to operate and maintain the app
  • to manage scan limits, referrals, and anti-abuse protections
  • to provide premium subscription features
  • to display advertisements in the free version
  • to improve app reliability, detect errors, and troubleshoot issues
  • to respond to support requests
  • to comply with legal obligations
  • to protect the safety, security, and integrity of the Service

4. How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information in the ordinary sense of selling customer lists for money. However, we may share information with service providers as necessary to operate the app.

We may share information with the following categories of third parties:

A. AI Processing Providers

We use Google Gemini and related Google services to process food label images and dietary profile text in order to generate analysis results.

This may include:

  • food label photos
  • extracted text
  • dietary profile text
  • custom dietary notes or rules

Google’s handling of data is governed by its own terms and privacy policies.

B. Backend / Infrastructure Providers

We use service providers such as Supabase and related infrastructure vendors to support anonymous authentication, scan limits, referral codes, and app functionality.

C. Subscription Providers

We use RevenueCat and Apple to manage premium subscriptions, purchases, and entitlements.

D. Advertising Providers

We use Google AdMob and related advertising partners to serve ads and measure ad performance.

E. Legal and Safety Disclosures

We may disclose information if required to do so by law, subpoena, legal process, or governmental request, or if we believe disclosure is reasonably necessary to:

  • enforce our Terms
  • protect the rights, property, or safety of VeraBite, our users, or others
  • investigate fraud, abuse, or security issues

5. Third-Party Services

VeraBite may use third-party services that process information subject to their own privacy policies and terms. These may include:

  • Google Gemini / Google AI services
  • Google AdMob
  • RevenueCat
  • Supabase
  • Apple App Store / Apple billing services

You should review the privacy policies of those services for more information about how they handle data.

6. Data Retention

We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary to provide the Service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements.

General retention principles:

  • food label images submitted for scanning are intended to be processed and not permanently stored on our servers
  • local scan history is stored on your device until you delete it, clear app data, or remove the app
  • anonymous identifiers, scan counters, referral data, and subscription status may be retained as long as needed to operate the Service and prevent abuse
  • support communications may be retained as needed to address your request and maintain records

Fraud and abuse prevention: if you use the in-app delete account feature, we delete your account data and local history, but we may retain a minimal anti-abuse record (such as anonymous usage counters and a non-personal fraud-prevention token) to prevent repeated scan resets or referral abuse. This record does not include your name, email, or scan history and is used only for security and integrity purposes.

7. Your Choices

Depending on your device settings and applicable law, you may be able to:

  • deny camera or photo library permissions
  • decline Apple App Tracking Transparency permission
  • manage or cancel subscriptions through your Apple account settings
  • delete local scan history by removing app data or uninstalling the app
  • delete your account within the app (we remove server data and local data, and may keep a minimal anti-abuse record as described above)
  • avoid entering custom dietary free-text information
  • contact us regarding privacy questions or requests

Because VeraBite does not require a traditional user account, our ability to identify and fulfill certain access or deletion requests may be limited unless you provide enough information for us to locate the relevant data.

8. International Data Transfers

Your information may be processed in countries other than your own, including countries where our service providers operate. These countries may have data protection laws that differ from those in your jurisdiction.

By using VeraBite, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in those countries, subject to applicable safeguards where required by law.

9. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect information we process. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

10. Children’s Privacy

VeraBite is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

If additional age thresholds apply in your jurisdiction, those laws may also apply.

11. App Permissions

VeraBite may request the following permissions:

  • Camera: to capture food label and nutrition images
  • Photo Library: to select existing images from your device
  • Tracking Permission (ATT, where applicable): to allow personalized advertising if you choose to grant it

You may manage permissions in your device settings.

12. California / U.S. State Privacy Notice

If you reside in California or another U.S. state with privacy rights, you may have certain rights under applicable law, such as the right to know, access, delete, or correct certain information, and the right to opt out of certain data uses.

Because VeraBite generally uses anonymous identifiers rather than traditional named accounts, some rights requests may require additional information from you so we can verify and locate relevant records.

To make a privacy request, contact us at the email below.

13. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we may update the “Effective Date” above and may provide additional notice where required by law.

Your continued use of VeraBite after any update means you acknowledge the revised Privacy Policy.
